Vice President & Senior Counsel
Matt Bergman joined Marino in January, 2012, and serves as Vice President & Senior Counsel.
Matt received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and was a practicing corporate finance and business restructuring attorney for roughly three years, primarily as an associate of Weil Gotshal & Manges. During that time, he represented high-profile financial institutions, large-cap corporate borrowers and private equity sponsors in the areas of bank finance, complex company reorganizations, M&A, and structured finance.
Among other notable transactions, Matt assisted in the representations of both Lehman Brothers and General Motors in those companies’ historic Chapter 11 proceedings. He remains a licensed attorney.
In addition to his J.D., Matt holds an M.S. in Finance, magna cum laude, from Pace’s Lubin School of Business, where he currently serves on the Graduate Executive Degrees Program Advisory Board, He received his B.A., cum laude, in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a licensed real estate broker and a member of Sigma Beta Kappa.
Matt is also a trained credit analyst and has worked as a valuation consultant to privately held businesses. Prior to law school, he worked in the communications offices of U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey and former Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano.
At Marino, Matt focuses on firm-wide strategic and corporate development, provides big-picture counsel on client strategy and messaging, and advises on legal, business and financial matters. He also leads Marino's efforts to utilize data-driven and statistically-grounded communications tactics and plays a key role in developing the Firm's growing Technology & Innovation practice - in such capacity he has developed expertise in lean startup techniques and analytics and works to incorporate such wherever appropriate.
His other central responsibilities include playing a key role in crisis communications efforts; advising on selected technical and startup accounts; assisting in preparing comprehensive strategic communications plans for clients at the outset of engagements; developing new business; conducting market and media research; managing website content creation; and serving as a roving consulting resource.
Despite taking a non-traditional route to a career in strategic communications, Matt loves helping devise creative, public-facing solutions to complex challenges confronting clients, and is an intense advocate of Marino’s strategic approach.
